Human Influence
How are the species impacted?
-Carbon emissions released from human activity leads to the invasion of species and reduces the scale of "actual" tundra. This means that organisms that thrive off the tundras cold environment are suddenly depleting due to the fact that there not built to adapt.
-Overfishing and hunting is another problem.
-Development also effects organisms quality of life. Oil pipelines require lots of digging up land as well as the development of roads. This means that animals habitats are sectioned off into sections and plants are water are destroyed and contaminated. In addition, the growing conditions in the tundra do not allow for quick re-growth and can take years to rebuild itself.
-Pollutants such as insecticide DDt and PCB are also harmful to sensitive organisms and can kill in great numbers.
Economic interests and industries creating major impacts in the tundra
-Oil and Gas corporations
Conservation efforts
Arctic Flora and Fauna: A group dedicated to the protection of biodiversity in the Arctic. They conduct research to find out about the status of habitats and wildlife and put out reports to inform the government and civilians.
The Alaska Coalition: Concerned about the protection of the tundras wilderness regions. Their goals are to educate people on the need to protect these areas as well as to pressure the government to pass legislation that protects alaska wilderness.
WWF Conservation: Targets several areas where there is disappearing habitats and animals in danger because of it. their main concerns include; oil and gas production and climate change in local habitats.
Positive and two negative impacts of human activity
Positive:
-More knowledge about the biodiversity of the tundra has been gained meaning that more people know about whats going on in the tundra.
-Industry and wealth from oil and and gas corporations.
Negative:
-Climate change from carbon emissions
-Loss of habitat due to housing and oil and gas companies.
-The effects of chemicals on the environment.
